Taliqik Formation

Taliqik Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Late Late Triassic (TJ14a)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Shushan River in Baicheng Country, Xinjiang. It was named by Compilation Group of Regional Stratigraphic Table of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981. Huang Jiqing called this set of strata as Shuixigou System in 1943, which was renamed as Misbulak Series by Ministry of Geology/Bureau of Petroleum in 1957. According to fossil plants, it was regarded as Early Jurassic by Si Xingjian and Zhou Zhiyan. In 1981, the compilation group of regional stratigraphic tables in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region named the Taliqik Formation that was regarded as Late Triassic. Uppermost formation in Xiaoquangou Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

This formation, 1771 m thick, mainly composed of gray and grayish-white sandstone, conglomerate, grayish-black siltstone, carbonaceous mudstone and coal seam. There is a bed of gray and white conglomerate at the bottom. Lower and Middle parts consist of grayish-yellow coarse sandstone and carbonaceous shale. Upper part is composed of grayish-white coarse sandstone intercalated with coal seams. This formation contains grayish-green argillaceous siltstone, coarse sandstone and grayish-black mudstone intercalated with coal seams.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Taliqik Fm is conformable in contact to underlying Huangshanjie Fm with a bed of conglomerate or glutenite (=gravel-rich).

Upper contact

It is disconformable in contact to Ahe Fm of lower Jurassic.

Regional extent

The formation is restrictively distributed at northern Tarim Basin. The thickness is the largest around the Kapushaliang River and Kuche River, about 820.3 m at the Kapushaliang River.

Age

In 1981, the compilation group of regional stratigraphic tables in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region named the Taliqik Formation that was regarded as Late Triassic. Then the age of this formation was suggested as late Late Triassic based on palynological data by the Northwest Bureau of Petroleum Geology, Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1985, and Zhou Zhiyi and Chen Piji in 1990
